Gold extends record run as US action in Venezuela shakes markets     Back
(14:24, 05 Jan 2026)
Gold prices jumped by more than $100 to around $4435 per ounce in Asian trading on Monday after a surprise US military operation in Venezuela led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, sparking fresh safe-haven demand. The move adds to gold’s strong momentum after prices surged over 60% in 2025, hitting a record high of $4584 per ounce toward year-end. Broader precious metals also rallied sharply, with silver jumping over 7% to $76 per ounce and platinum climbing more than 5% to $2229.9 per ounce, as investors reacted to heightened geopolitical uncertainty and potential fallout for energy markets. Reflecting the global strength, MCX February gold futures rose 1.5% to ₹137749 per 10 grams. Looking ahead, market participants are also closely watching key US economic data this week, especially Friday’s non-farm payrolls report, for further clues on the direction of US interest rates.
