Australian markets ended notably lower, though energy stocks and gold miners surged in response to the worsening situation in the Middle East. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.67 percent to 8,150 while the broader All Ordinaries index closed 0.68 percent lower at 8,416.60.
